Frequently Asked Questions
How is the 3-2-1 Swim Pack different from a life jacket or arm floaties?
They do different jobs. An approved life jacket is designed to keep a child's face out of the water. That's exactly what you want on a boat, near open water, or any time you can't be within arm's reach. That same face-up design is also why a life jacket can't teach a swimming position.
Arm floaties and many swim vests hold kids upright, so they learn a vertical "bicycle" kick instead of swimming.
The 3-2-1 Swim Pack is a learn-to-swim aid built for supervised practice:
- Progressive learning: The three foam layers come off one at a time as your child reaches each milestone. With less support, their body naturally settles into a flatter, horizontal swimming position.
- Proper body position: The Swim Pack supports a horizontal position from day one, so kids practise kicking, scooping and lifting their head to breathe the way real swimmers do.
- Freedom of movement: Nothing on the arms means full range of motion for developing their stroke. The closed-cell foam has nothing to inflate or deflate.
- Built for independence: Support comes off gradually, so kids build real skills instead of relying on the aid, at their own pace.
The 3-2-1 Swim Pack is not a lifesaving device, life jacket or PFD, and never a substitute for one. An adult must be in the water or within arm's reach, actively watching, at all times.
How do you learn to swim with the 3-2-1 Swim Pack?
Learn how to swim with the 3-2-1 Swim Pack in three simple steps*:
- Start with all foam layers in place, providing maximum support while your child builds water confidence and learns basic movements.
- As your child masters each swimming milestone (demonstrated in our guide videos), simply twist and remove one foam layer at a time. This gradual reduction helps position their body more parallel to the water as they progress.
- With each removed layer, your child develops stronger swimming skills and greater independence. After completing all three milestones, they'll be ready to swim 5 meters unassisted*.
Our learn to swim tool adapts to your child's learning pace, ensuring a safe and confidence-building journey to independent swimming.

How long does it take to learn how to swim with the 3-2-1 Swim Pack? What is the success rate using this product?
There is no one-size-fits all approach to learning how to swim. Every child’s learning journey is unique, which is why we developed the 3-2-1 Swim Pack to adapt to their natural pace. Based on a study conducted with 5,000 children from 2021 to 2023, our data shows that over 75% of children (ages 3-9) were able to swim 5 meters unassisted after approximately 10 hours of practice.
Our swim milestone videos provide step-by-step breakdowns to help with teaching kids to swim, focusing on essential skills like scooping, flutter kicking, and proper body positioning for each level.
Please note: Learning to swim for beginners can be challenging - regardless of age. Individual journeys will vary based on initial confidence and comfort level in the water, prior swimming experience and practice frequency.
Is adult supervision required when using the 3-2-1 Swim Pack?
Yes, always. The 3-2-1 Swim Pack is a learn-to-swim aid, not a lifesaving device, life jacket or PFD. An adult must be in the water or within arm's reach, actively watching, every time. For boating or open water, use a U.S. Coast Guard or Transport Canada approved life jacket.
Is the 3-2-1 Swim Pack Coast Guard approved?
No. It's a swim training aid, not a life jacket or PFD, so it isn't designed or approved to keep a child afloat without help. For boating and open water, your child needs a U.S. Coast Guard or Transport Canada approved life jacket.
Can my child use it at the lake, beach or on a boat?
It's designed for pools and swim lessons. For open water or boats, use an approved life jacket.
Can my child jump in wearing it?
Gentle jumps from the pool edge to an adult are fine. No diving boards or rough play: the extra force can damage the layer connectors. Check the layers are locked before every swim.
What if a layer comes loose or a part breaks?
Take your child out of the water and stop using it. Email support@kaizenkidz.com and we'll send a replacement part.
